Project to revive historic radio staion aims to rev up West Memphis music tourism

Graceland, Sun Studios, the Stax Museum and other music tourism destinations will soon be making room for a West Memphis gem, thanks to a project to revive radio station KWEM.

Active in the late 1940s and the 1950s, KWEM was known as an early leg up for musicians who went on to much wider acclaim – artists like Howlin’ Wolf, B.B King, Sonny Boy Williamson, Elvis Presley, and Johnny Cash.

Using space at Mid-South Community College, KWEM is once again broadcasting, this time on the internet. MSCC officials and KWEM enthusiasts are hoping KWEM will be added to the lists of Mid-South visitors soaking up the history at Graceland, Sun Studios and other musical landmarks.

Memphis National Public Radio affiliate WKNO-FM recently aired a feature about KWEM. You can read more about the staion and listen to the clip here.
