New big box store signals continued retail resurgence

Eastern Arkansas residents with do-it-yourself tendencies will have a reason to celebrate when Tractor Supply Co. opens the doors on a new location in West Memphis later this year.

Construction is set to begin in early September on a new 20,000 square-foot facility at the corner of College Blvd. and the I-40 service road. The store should be open for business in early 2013.

Founded in 1938 as a mail order truck parts business and now headquartered in Brentwood, Tenn., Tractor Supply Company has close to 1,100 stores in 38 states. The big box chain offers a number of products for home improvement, agriculture, lawn and garden maintenance, and livestock and pet care.

West Memphis Mayor William Johnson says he believes the store’s success is all but guaranteed.

“We’re excited to have a first class, high quality store like Tractor Supply Co. located here in West Memphis,” Johnson said. “It’s a perfect fit for our community.”

Ward Wimbish, the city’s Economic Development Director, said the new store will fill an important niche in the community.

“We are looking forward to having a consumer-friendly building supply store like this join the West Memphis retail community ,” Wimbish said. “Tractor Supply Co. is going to provide a service that not only West Memphis, but all of Eastern Arkansas, has been needing.”

City leaders see the company’s decision to locate in West Memphis as a hopeful sign for the slowly recovering economy. The move comes on the heels of the completion of The Market Place at West Memphis, a 29,340-square-foot retail center, which opened in the spring of 2011 and is located in the shadow of the city’s Wal-Mart Super Center.

Van Spear, SIOR, CRE, Saig Company, represented both the property owner, Randy Catt, President of Guaranty Loan, and Rick Wilson Enterprises, LLC, the developer for Tractor Supply Company, in the transaction.

“This just enhances our position as a retail center for Eastern Arkansas and Downtown Memphis,” Spear said.
